Insulation strategies that keep outer surfaces closer to internal conditions reduce the severity of these gradients. Cavity pressure also deserves attention. Fluid trapped between seats expands when heat rises and can generate forces far above design ratings if no relief path exists. Leaving a small vapor space or providing a cavity relief feature mitigates this risk.

Operating practices interact with all the above factors. Closing under full hot differential pressure then allowing the system to cool before attempting to reopen maximizes the chance of binding. Moderate seating force and controlled rates of heat change lower the severity of the effects. Periodic inspection of packing load stem torque and seat contact after representative numbers of cycles supplies data for predictive maintenance.
