1. Understand What Player Instructions Do

Player Instructions control individual behavior during matches. For example, you can tell a striker to stay central, make attacking runs, or get in behind the defense. A full-back can be asked to overlap, while a midfielder can stay back and protect the defense.

These changes may look small, but they can have a major effect on your team's shape and attacking patterns. Before changing everything, start with the players who have the biggest impact on your system.

2. Focus on Key Instructions

Attacking runs, defensive support, and positioning are some of the most important areas to adjust.

For strikers, Get In Behind can be useful when you have a fast forward who can exploit space behind defenders. If your striker is better at holding the ball and linking play, a more balanced approach may work better.

For full-backs, Overlap can create additional attacking options on the wings. However, this can leave space behind them, so avoid using aggressive attacking instructions on both sides if your midfield cannot provide enough defensive cover.

Midfield instructions are equally important. A defensive midfielder can stay back while attacking to protect your center-backs, while a more creative midfielder can be given greater freedom to support attacks.

3. Match Instructions to Player Strengths

Do not give every player the same instructions. Instead, build roles around their attributes.

A fast striker is usually better suited to runs behind the defensive line, while a strong or composed forward may be more effective when used to hold up the ball. A defensive midfielder should focus on protecting the team, while a creative midfielder can take more responsibility in attack.

The goal is to make each instruction support what the player already does well.

4. Keep Your Team Balanced

The biggest mistake is making too many players attack at the same time. If both full-backs push forward and your midfielders also move aggressively into the final third, opponents can quickly exploit the open space.

At the same time, keeping too many players behind the ball can make your attack predictable. Try to create a clear balance between attacking support and defensive security.

5. Review Your Instructions Regularly

Your instructions should change when your squad changes. A new striker, midfielder, or full-back may require a different role from the player they replaced.

After a few matches, check where your team is struggling. If attacks lack width, adjust your wide players or full-backs. If you concede too many counterattacks, add more defensive support.
