Cost Management and Variance Analysis for the US CMA Course: A Practical Primer
A practical primer on standard costing, material and labour variances, overhead and CVP analysis for US CMA candidates.
Cost management is a heavily tested and practical topic in the US CMA course. Mastering it helps in the exam and in real FP&A work.
Why cost management matters
Companies need to know what products cost, why costs differ from plan and how to improve margins. The CMA syllabus tests how well you can calculate and interpret these ideas .
Standard costing in brief
Standard costs are expected costs per unit for materials, labour and overhead. Actual results are compared with these standards to find variances.
Key variances
- Material price variance: difference between actual and standard price, applied to actual quantity.
- Material usage (efficiency) variance: difference between actual and standard quantity, valued at standard price.
- Labour rate variance: difference between actual and standard wage rate.
- Labour efficiency variance: difference between actual and standard hours.
- Overhead variances: spending, efficiency and volume variances for variable and fixed overhead.
A variance is favourable if it increases profit and unfavourable if it reduces it.
A short illustration
Suppose the standard price of a material is 10 per kg, but the company paid 11 for 1,000 kg. The price variance is (11 minus 10) times 1,000, which is 1,000 unfavourable. A good analyst then asks why: supplier price rise, rush order or poor negotiation.
Cost-volume-profit (CVP) analysis
CVP shows how costs, volume and profit relate. Key ideas include contribution margin, break-even point and margin of safety.
Costing systems
You should understand job costing, process costing, absorption versus variable costing and activity-based costing, plus when each is useful.
How to study this topic
- Practise calculation questions until the formulas feel natural
- Learn the logic behind each variance, not just the formula
- Practise explaining likely causes
- Draw simple diagrams to link variances
Common mistakes
- Mixing up actual and standard quantities
- Sign errors on favourable and unfavourable labels
- Forgetting to value variances at the right price
Link to the job
Variance analysis is a daily FP&A task, so strong skills here pay off beyond the exam.
Use Excel
Build a small variance model in Excel to reinforce the concepts and show recruiters.
